What's the right way to secure my home Wi-Fi in 2026?

By Neha Verma·April 29, 2026 4 min 8,430
Short answer

Enable WPA3, use a long unique passphrase, isolate IoT devices on a guest network, and keep router firmware on auto-update.

The full answer

WPA3 fixes the offline dictionary attack that plagued WPA2. If your router supports it, switch to WPA3 or WPA2/WPA3 mixed mode and pick a 5+ word passphrase.

Put smart bulbs, cameras, and TVs on a separate SSID — most consumer routers now expose this as 'IoT network'. A compromised camera shouldn't have a path to your laptop.

Disable WPS, disable remote admin from the WAN, and change the default admin password. Then turn on automatic firmware updates and forget about it.
